Minneapolis Community Demands Justice for Woman Shot by ICE Agent
Family and community members are mourning the tragic death of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis. The incident occurred shortly after she dropped her youngest child at an elementary school, raising significant questions and outrage regarding the circumstances surrounding her death.
Good was shot while sitting in her vehicle, reportedly after an encounter with ICE agents. Eyewitness accounts and social media videos depict a rapid sequence of events. An officer approached her car, demanding she open the door. When she attempted to pull away, another officer fired at least two shots into her vehicle from close range. The entire incident unfolded in less than ten seconds, leaving many in the community in shock and disbelief.
Community Response and Outrage
In the wake of Good’s death, her family and neighbors have vehemently disputed the narrative put forth by federal officials, who have characterized her as a domestic threat. Friends and family describe her as a gentle and kind person, contradicting claims that she posed any danger. A handwritten sign in the neighborhood read, “NO MEDIA INQUIRIES” and “JUSTICE FOR RENEE,” indicating the community’s desire for privacy and respect during this grieving period.
Good, a U.S. citizen born in Colorado, had no known criminal history beyond a single traffic ticket. Her ex-husband, who requested anonymity, stated that she was not politically active and had never engaged in protests. He emphasized that she was merely on her way home when she encountered the officers on a snowy street.
In social media posts, Good described herself as a “poet and writer and wife and mom,” sharing glimpses of her life, including her experiences in Minneapolis, accompanied by pride emojis. Her online presence reflected a vibrant and ordinary life, which has now been abruptly cut short.
Calls for Accountability
Local leaders, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have called for accountability, rejecting the federal government’s justification for the shooting. Frey labeled the self-defense claim as “garbage,” highlighting video evidence that contradicts the official narrative. The community continues to rally around Good’s family, demanding justice and accountability in her name.
Protesters gathered in the area where Good was killed, blocking the street with makeshift memorials, including flowers and a hand-crafted cross. The family, still reeling from the loss, is calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, expressed her grief, stating, “Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. She was extremely compassionate.” Friends remembered her not just for her gentle nature but also for her contributions to creative writing, having studied at Old Dominion University in Virginia, where she won a prize for her work in 2020.
As investigations continue, the community of Minneapolis remains united in mourning a woman they insist did not fit the dangerous image painted by authorities. The call for justice is growing louder, as family, friends, and neighbors seek to honor Good’s memory and ensure accountability for her untimely death.
