Missing Tramper Graham Garnett Found Alive in National Park

A tramper missing since December 30, 2023, in Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand, has been located alive. Sixty-six-year-old Graham Garnett was discovered around 14:30 on Sunday at Venus Hut by contractors working in the area. He was subsequently airlifted by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, operated by GCH Aviation, and transported to Nelson Hospital.

According to Police Search and Rescue Sergeant Jonny Evans, Garnett has been reunited with his family following his ordeal. “This is an amazing result,” Evans commented. “We are so pleased for Graham and his loved ones. Obviously, he has been through quite an ordeal, and everyone involved in the search is delighted to hear that Graham has been found alive.”

Garnett’s disappearance had raised significant concern, prompting extensive search efforts. He failed to return home after embarking on a hike, leading to a coordinated operation involving four specialist canyon teams and a Defence Force NH90 helicopter. Earlier this week, authorities indicated they would suspend the extensive search, which had been ongoing for several days.

The successful recovery of Garnett underscores the dedication of search and rescue teams, who undertook challenging conditions in their efforts to locate him. Evans expressed gratitude to all those who participated, highlighting the relief shared by the community upon hearing the news of Garnett’s survival.
