Autistic Young Man Triumphs as Concrete Apprentice of the Year
A young man from Waihi has made significant strides in his life and career, recently being awarded the title of Concrete Industry Apprentice of the Year for 2025. At just 21 years old, Todd Maitland has overcome numerous challenges, including late verbal development and significant vision loss, to excel in his chosen field.
Todd’s journey began when he did not speak until nearly the age of 9. His challenges continued when, at 13, he lost full sight in one eye. Despite these hurdles, Todd found passion and purpose on the basketball courts of Tauranga, which led him to explore the hands-on world of trades.
Last month, Todd was recognized by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) for his exceptional work, completing level 3 in his apprenticeship. The award came as a surprise to him, as he expressed his gratitude: “I’m just really happy and grateful … I didn’t expect to win,” he said.
Through hard work and determination, Todd has not only succeeded in his apprenticeship but has also achieved another milestone—purchasing his first home. His accomplishments serve as an inspiring example for many others facing similar challenges.
Todd’s story highlights the importance of resilience and support in overcoming obstacles. His achievements reflect a broader message about the potential of individuals with autism, demonstrating that with the right guidance and determination, they can thrive in various fields.
As Todd continues his journey in the concrete industry, he hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams, regardless of the challenges they may face. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of recognizing and nurturing talent in all individuals.
