Coroner Advocates for Fishing Ban at Drowning-Prone Papanui Point
A coroner has recommended a ban on public access to Papanui Point following the tragic drownings of two Filipino flatmates, Olson Canatoy and Eric Dabalos. The incident, which occurred south of Raglan, has raised serious concerns about the safety of the area, known for its treacherous conditions.
On the day of the incident, the pair had been warned about the dangers of fishing at Papanui Point. They had even witnessed another man being swept away from the same location. Despite these warnings, Canatoy assured a friend that they were skilled swimmers and knew how to navigate the waters safely. Sadly, both men are now part of a tragic statistic, joining more than 20 individuals who have drowned at this notorious site over the years.
The coroner’s report highlights the ongoing risks associated with fishing at Papanui Point, an area that has claimed numerous lives due to its unpredictable and dangerous surf conditions. The recommendation to restrict public access aims to prevent further tragedies, addressing the longstanding issue of safety in this popular fishing spot.
Local authorities have been urged to take immediate action to implement the proposed ban. In light of the recent drownings, officials are reassessing safety measures and considering educational campaigns to inform the public about the inherent dangers of the area.
Community members have expressed their condolences to the families of Canatoy and Dabalos, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and respect for the ocean’s power. Their tragic deaths serve as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who venture into such hazardous waters.
As discussions about the ban continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of fishermen and visitors to Papanui Point. The coroner’s recommendations may lead to significant changes in how access to the area is managed, potentially saving lives in the future.
