Demolition of Wellington’s Gordon Wilson Flats Set to Begin

Demolition of the Gordon Wilson Flats in central Wellington will commence this month, following the removal of the building’s heritage status. The decision, confirmed by Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, paves the way for new student accommodation in the area. This significant move comes after RMA and Housing Minister Chris Bishop acted in June 2023 to strip the building of its heritage designation.

Vice Chancellor Nic Smith stated that the university has engaged a contractor for the demolition, which is deemed necessary due to extensive structural issues. “We’ve considered all options, and unfortunately, restoration is not financially viable. The structures suffer from extensive rot, asbestos, seismic issues, and other critical problems that make restoration too costly,” Smith explained.

The decision to demolish the flats has not been taken lightly. Smith emphasized the potential dangers posed by the deteriorating buildings, which are classified as earthquake-prone. Over the past decade, the condition of the flats has significantly declined, leading to safety concerns for both the university community and the surrounding area.
