Fiji Edges Spain 41-33 in Thrilling Rugby Clash in Málaga
The Fijian rugby team secured a narrow victory over Spain, winning 41-33 in a tightly contested match at the Estadio de Atletismo Ciudad de Málaga on March 3, 2024. This victory came as a much-needed boost for Fiji, who had previously suffered defeats to England and France during their European tour. The match showcased the resilience of the Flying Fijians, who had to come from behind multiple times to clinch the win against a spirited Spanish side.
Fiji’s captain, Tevita Ikanivere, acknowledged the challenges faced during the match, stating, “Very tough game. Spain were very good tonight. We could have done better but proud of the boys out there.” The Fijian team, ranked eighth in the world, struggled to manage Spain’s aggressive play, particularly their effective mauls, which proved pivotal throughout the match.
Spain set the tone early, pressuring Fiji from the start and capitalizing on early mistakes. In the 20th minute, Spain took the lead when halfback Estanislao Bay scored the first try, converting it to make it 7-0. Fiji responded swiftly through a well-executed cross-kick from fly-half Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula, finding Elia Cakananivata, who scored to level the match.
At halftime, Spain held a narrow advantage at 15-14, thanks to a penalty kick and a well-crafted try, despite Fiji’s efforts, including a try from halfback Simione Kuruvoli. Kuruvoli’s try came after winger Juita Wainiqolo broke through Spain’s defense and offloaded to him.
The second half saw Kuruvoli score again, giving Fiji a 21-15 lead. Yet Spain responded immediately, with Bay crossing the line for his second try, flipping the score in Spain’s favor once more. An exchange of penalties and another try saw Spain extend their lead to 33-24 in the 63rd minute.
Fiji’s determination shone through as replacement forward Atunaisa Sokowale powered over to reduce the deficit to 33-31, with just eight minutes remaining. Armstrong-Ravula’s tactical prowess was evident again when he delivered another cross-kick, this time to winger Joji Nasova, who scored to reclaim the lead for Fiji at 38-33. Armstrong-Ravula capped off the performance with a penalty, securing the final score at 41-33.
This match not only highlighted Fiji’s fighting spirit but also demonstrated Spain’s growing prowess in rugby. With their European tour concluded, the Flying Fijians will take important lessons from this experience as they prepare for future challenges on the rugby field.
