Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is set to engage in a series of interviews this week as he prepares for his anticipated visit to Waitangi, following a notable absence last year amid controversy surrounding the Treaty Principles Bill. Luxon will appear on Newstalk ZB with host Mike Hosking at 07:37 on February 5, 2024.

This year’s commemorations hold significance as Luxon returns to the Treaty grounds with the Act Party‘s controversial bill no longer a focal point for protesters. His absence during the previous year drew criticism, particularly as the bill was under discussion in Parliament at that time.

Luxon is currently navigating tensions between his party, National, and NZ First regarding the NZ-India Free Trade deal. He recently dismissed concerns raised by Winston Peters, the leader of NZ First, regarding immigration as “wrong.” The Prime Minister has also faced scrutiny following an incident where a firefighter made an inappropriate gesture behind him during a public event. Fire and Emergency has condemned the behavior and initiated an investigation.

The Prime Minister last attended Waitangi in 2024, where he promised a “relentless” focus on economic improvement during his first term. The following year, he was criticized for choosing to spend Waitangi Day with Ngai Tahu in the South Island, while the Treaty Principles Bill was still under review.

This year, Luxon will be in Auckland on February 6 but plans to arrive at Waitangi on February 5 to engage with the Iwi Chairs Forum and participate in the official welcome for politicians. His media schedule also includes an appearance on Ryan Bridge’s show on the same day after 08:00.

As Luxon prepares for this significant event, his government faces the challenge of addressing various pressing issues while seeking to reaffirm its commitment to the Treaty and its principles.
