Rotorua Businesses Support Removal of Hazardous City Trees
The removal of four aging sweet gum trees in central Rotorua has been positively received by local businesses. The trees were felled this week as part of a health and safety initiative, leading to the temporary closure of a section of Amohia Street from Monday, March 11, 2024, to Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
While some community members expressed concern over the environmental implications of the tree removal on social media, the Rotorua Lakes Council defended its decision. The council cited recommendations from experts regarding potential risks associated with the trees’ condition.
Rob Pitkethley, the council’s parks and open spaces manager, stated, “The trees have been showing signs of potential limb branch failures as they have aged. The size and weight of these limbs would require us to continually increase maintenance of the tree canopies.” This assessment prompted the council to act to ensure public safety.
The council’s decision reflects a broader commitment to maintaining a safe urban environment while addressing the concerns of local businesses. Many owners in the area noted that the trees posed a risk to pedestrians and vehicles, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
Business owners have expressed understanding of the need for the removals, emphasizing the importance of ensuring safety in the bustling city center. The council plans to explore alternative landscaping options that align with the community’s aesthetic and environmental goals.
As discussions continue around urban greenery and safety, the focus remains on balancing environmental considerations with public health. The recent tree removal has sparked a broader dialogue about the management of urban forestry and the role of local councils in mitigating risks associated with aging trees.
The Rotorua community will look to the council for updates on future landscaping initiatives and any plans to replace the felled trees with new vegetation that supports biodiversity while ensuring safety for all.
