Authorities are intensifying their search efforts for a missing tramper in Kahurangi National Park, located on New Zealand’s South Island. Graham Garnett, a 66-year-old man, was reported missing after failing to return from a tramping expedition in the Baton/Ellis River area on December 30, 2023. Police have been actively searching for Garnett for over a week, utilizing various resources to locate him.

According to Police Search and Rescue Sergeant Johnny Evans, the search operation has expanded significantly. On the latest day of the search, five helicopters were deployed, including an Airforce NH90 helicopter, to cover more ground. The search teams faced challenging conditions as they navigated the steep terrain of the national park.

In addition to aerial support, two specialist canyon teams were deployed to conduct thorough ground searches using advanced equipment. Evans noted that the rugged landscape posed significant difficulties for the search teams, but their determination remains strong. A dedicated field team also combed through the designated search areas to find any signs of Garnett.

Local authorities, along with volunteers, are committed to continuing the search until there is a resolution. The community has rallied in support of Garnett’s family, with many expressing hope for a positive outcome. The efforts highlight the challenges that search and rescue operations face in remote and difficult terrains, especially in areas as expansive as Kahurangi National Park.

The police urge anyone with information regarding Garnett’s whereabouts to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community assistance in such situations. As the search continues, authorities remain hopeful that they will locate the missing tramper safely.
