Mercury NZ Commits $550 Million to Modernize Historic Hydro Stations

Electricity generator Mercury NZ has announced a significant investment of $550 million aimed at upgrading three of its historic hydroelectric stations, which range in age from 64 to 75 years. This initiative represents the largest reinvestment in New Zealand’s renewable energy sector to date, with expectations to enhance the efficiency of the Maraetai, Ohakuri, and Atiamuri sites, ultimately boosting output by up to 58 megawatts.
During a recent tour of the Maraetai 1 station located along the Waikato River, Mercury’s chief executive, Stew Hamilton, discussed the transformative impact of this investment. “That will combine three stations, 13 units and a half-a-billion-dollar investment,” Hamilton stated. “And that becomes pretty exciting. One, because it lets us manage the risk across the stations better, it lets us manage the cash flow better, but equally it means we can attract some of the large global technology suppliers where ordinarily they wouldn’t look at New Zealand.”
The tour highlighted the aging infrastructure at the site, with outdated landline phones still lining the hallways and sage-green paint covering the switch room cabinets. These visual markers of age underscore the need for modernisation to ensure these vital energy sources can continue to meet national demands.
The investment will not only enhance operational capabilities but also aims to align with global technological advancements, allowing Mercury to remain competitive in an evolving energy landscape. By integrating newer technology, the company hopes to improve overall performance while contributing to New Zealand’s renewable energy goals.
With a commitment to sustainable energy, Mercury NZ’s investment marks a pivotal moment in the company’s history and for New Zealand’s energy sector. As the country seeks to transition to more sustainable energy sources, this reinvestment into hydroelectric power stands as a testament to the potential of renewable energy in driving future economic growth and energy independence.
