Artist and illustrator Jenny Mehrtens has published a children’s book inspired by her grandson, William Mehrtens, following a heartfelt gesture for his third birthday in March 2023. Originally intended as a birthday gift, the book titled William and Rosa Go For a Walk captures the adventures of William and his best friend, Rosa, as they embark on a quest to find a fantail.

Mehrtens, who operates a studio and gallery in the Dudley’s Cottage Precinct, posted illustrations from the book on her Instagram page, receiving positive feedback that encouraged her to pursue publication. “I certainly don’t call myself a writer, but it was coming from the heart about what a 3-year-old might love,” she explained.

The creation of the book allowed Mehrtens to explore her artistic skills, including learning to paint with watercolours. She described the self-publishing process as “a lot of fun.” The finished product features a fabric cover, with the inside covers showcasing her signature style of gold leaf and multi-layered acrylic paint on oak board.

Mehrtens expressed nostalgia for beautifully crafted books, saying, “I grew up loving the feel of beautiful books — books that had fabric covers and gold leaf.” Her work resonates with this sentiment, aiming to provide children with a tangible and engaging reading experience.

During her recent visit to Copenhagen, where William resides, the book proved to be a hit. Mehrtens often read the story to her grandson, who was captivated by the narrative. “By the time I left, he was almost saying it verbatim,” she noted proudly.

For those interested in acquiring a copy of William and Rosa Go For a Walk, it is available for $49. Readers can purchase it directly at Mehrtens’ studio or by contacting her via email at [email protected].

Mehrtens’ journey from a personal gift to published author illustrates not only her artistic abilities but also the deep bond between a grandparent and grandchild, showcasing how love and creativity can intertwine to produce something truly special.
