Crowds Gather for Opening of New SPCA Op Shop in Gore

The newly opened SPCA Op Shop in Gore attracted considerable attention, with a queue stretching out the door on its inaugural day. The store officially opened on March 15, 2024, marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring regional manager David Hutchinson, store manager Patrina Hedley, and assistant manager Evelon Barrow.
Mr. Hutchinson shared that the team transported two trucks filled with second-hand items from their warehouse in Christchurch. The shop’s space had undergone significant renovations and only began installation of the retail setup on the preceding Monday. “It’s a pretty good turnaround,” he remarked, noting the swift progress.
Community engagement was a key focus during the opening, with Eric Odell, a community support officer from Dunedin, present to address attendee inquiries. His role emphasizes outreach and support within the community, reiterating that despite the closure of the Gore SPCA centre in early 2021 due to building standards and repair costs, the organization continues to facilitate animal fostering and rescue through its partnership with VetSouth.
According to Mr. Odell, the SPCA aims to expand its presence across the country, although currently only 10% of its funding is sourced from the government. This financial challenge highlights the importance of community support for their operations. “They’re our bread and butter, if you like, that keeps the doors open,” Mr. Hutchinson emphasized, referring to the vital role of shop volunteers.
The new Op Shop has already received donations from the local community, with Mrs. Hedley stating, “We wouldn’t put anything out we wouldn’t wear ourselves.” The store adheres to specific guidelines regarding the quality and safety of donated items. Mr. Hutchinson mentioned that while they have restrictions on flammable materials, they are pleased to see many acceptable brands, including those from Kmart and Temu.
Pricing at the Op Shop aligns with the standards across the SPCA’s 90 locations nationwide. However, Mr. Hutchinson noted that unique items, such as designer clothing or collectible goods, may be priced higher. “People donate some amazing things,” he remarked, highlighting the generosity of the community.
With the shop now open, the SPCA in Gore is poised to not only generate funds for its operations but also to foster community spirit through its mission of animal welfare. As the organization looks to fill volunteer positions, it remains committed to supporting the local community and ensuring the well-being of animals in need.
