Mangawhai Coastguard’s Training Turns Into Successful Rescue

The crew of Kokako Rescue from the Mangawhai Coastguard unexpectedly transitioned from a training exercise to real-life rescues on Saturday, April 15, 2024. During their routine drill, they responded to two urgent situations, successfully assisting nine individuals, including children.

While conducting their training between the Mangawhai harbour entrance and the Hen and Chicken Islands, the Kokako crew encountered a four-metre alloy trailerboat that had broken down. The vessel had six people on board, two of whom were children. Upon arrival, the Kokako team discovered that a recreational vessel was already towing the disabled boat. Taking over the towing responsibilities, Kokako safely guided the vessel back across the bar and into the harbour.

After completing this rescue, the crew resumed their sector search exercise. Shortly thereafter, they encountered another vessel experiencing battery issues. Crewman Micah took the lead in jump-starting the boat, allowing it to return to shore under Kokako’s supervision. Following a refueling stop, the team continued their training session without further incidents.

This unexpected shift from training to real rescues not only fulfilled the crew’s training requirements but also provided valuable public relations for the Mangawhai Coastguard. With nine individuals rescued during the day, the operation showcased the effectiveness and readiness of the crew.

Mangawhai Coastguard is currently undergoing an assessment that will determine its ability to officially engage in rescue operations, starting on Labour Weekend. The assessment, which must be completed by April 2024, evaluates the team’s operational competence on the water as well as the support they receive from the community and their overall management practices.

As the Kokako crew demonstrated their skills in real-world scenarios, their training was validated, proving their readiness to serve the community in future emergencies. This successful day not only highlighted the importance of training but also underscored the vital role of the Coastguard in ensuring safety on the water.
