Illustrator Fifi Colston Shapes Creative Legacy Through Art

Fifi Colston, a celebrated illustrator and designer, has carved out an impressive creative career, producing 56 books and contributing over 30 entries to the World of Wearable Art (WOW) competition. At 65, Colston resides in Hataitai, Wellington, with her husband, retired marketing specialist **Adrian Parkyn**, and their ginger cat, Griffin. Her latest children’s book, **The Little Yellow Digger 123**, was released in November 2023.

A Journey Through Creativity

Originally from Yorkshire, Colston’s childhood was marked by her father’s career as a jet fighter pilot, which took the family to various locations, including Africa. The Colston family eventually settled in Wellington when Fifi was eight years old. It was her Scottish aunt who first introduced her to the world of crafting, igniting a passion for creativity that would define her life.

Colston’s artistic journey began in earnest during her college years. Although she aspired to study art, she was placed in language courses due to her sisters’ academic paths. Undeterred, she channeled her creativity into illustrating textbooks and doodling on desks, often facing disciplinary measures that only fueled her passion for art.

After completing a three-year design course at Wellington Polytechnic, she initially aimed for a position in an Auckland advertising agency. However, when Adrian received a job offer in Christchurch, Colston adapted by starting her own freelance career, a decision that would prove to be a perfect fit for her lifestyle.

Achievements in Art and Design

Colston’s entry into the WOW competition began in **1995**, alongside friends from design school. Over the past three decades, she has maintained a prolific presence, showcasing her unique creations. With more than 30 entries to her name, Colston has become a significant figure in this prestigious competition.

Looking ahead, she plans to take a break from WOW to focus on designing props and costumes for an upcoming theatre production titled **The Monster Ate My Story**, written by her friend **Ruth Paul**. Scheduled for performance in April 2024, this project highlights her versatility and commitment to the arts.

Colston’s home reflects her artistic sensibilities. The couple has lived in their charming **160m²** double-bay villa, built in **1910**, since **1998**. After making significant renovations, including converting a bedroom into her studio, Colston has cultivated a vibrant space filled with character. She describes herself as a maximalist when it comes to decorating, finding joy in the collections that adorn her home, including cherished animal figures from her childhood in Ghana.

Despite her creative talents, Colston admits she does not enjoy cooking, a task she undertakes primarily to feed herself and Adrian. Their son, **Rory**, a trained chef, often delights them with his culinary skills when he visits.

The couple’s garden is a reflection of their relaxed approach to gardening, featuring a mix of roses and cacti planted by Rory. Colston’s life is filled with creativity, whether through her art, her home, or her family connections.

As she continues to swim in the sea with friends, embracing the benefits of cold water swimming for mental health, Colston dreams of living closer to the beach someday, should fortune favor her. For now, she finds joy in her established life in Hataitai, where both her personal and professional journeys converge in a celebration of creativity.
