Air New Zealand’s CEO Appointment Faces Racist Backlash

The appointment of Nikhil Ravishankar as the new chief executive of Air New Zealand has sparked significant controversy, resulting in a flood of racist remarks online. Major news outlets, including the New Zealand Herald and Radio New Zealand, were compelled to disable comments on social media posts following the backlash. Ravishankar, currently the chief digital officer at Air New Zealand, will succeed Greg Foran, who is set to step down in October 2023.
The announcement of Ravishankar’s appointment drew attention not only for its significance to the airline but also for the ethnic background of its new leader. As an individual of Indian descent, Ravishankar faced a torrent of abusive comments that led media organizations to restrict public discourse on their platforms. The New Zealand Herald noted that it had to disable comments “due to racist comments,” emphasizing the need to foster a safe online community free from hate and abuse.
“Our policy aims to reduce instances of hate, racism, and misinformation,” a spokesperson for the New Zealand Herald stated. “We cannot tolerate hate or abuse towards individuals.” Similarly, Radio New Zealand reported that it proactively disabled comments after monitoring revealed racist remarks, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining respectful community forums.
Background of Nikhil Ravishankar
Ravishankar, who holds bachelor’s degrees in science and commerce from the University of Auckland, has been with Air New Zealand for nearly five years. His previous roles include serving as the chief digital officer at Vector New Zealand and managing director at Accenture across Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand. His extensive experience in technology and customer service strategies positions him well for the challenges ahead.
In his initial public comments following his appointment, Ravishankar acknowledged the airline’s rich legacy. “This airline is an institution with a deep legacy but also a fantastic future,” he remarked. He expressed his commitment to the airline, stating, “It’s a privilege to step into the CEO role and take on that responsibility for our people, our customers, and our country.”
Demographics and Community Response
Recent census data indicates a growing Indian community in New Zealand, which has now become the third-largest ethnic group in the country. The 2023 Census reported that 292,092 individuals identified as part of the Indian community, showing a 22 percent increase since 2018. In comparison, the New Zealand European ethnic group remains the largest, with a population of 3,099,858, followed by Māori at 887,493. The Indian population in Auckland alone grew by 13 percent from 2018 to 2023.
The backlash against Ravishankar’s appointment has drawn criticism and concern from various sectors of society, highlighting the need for continued dialogue on race and representation in leadership roles. It also reflects broader societal attitudes towards diversity in corporate settings within New Zealand.
As Air New Zealand prepares for this new chapter under Ravishankar’s leadership, the airline and its stakeholders are faced with the dual challenge of addressing the recent backlash while promoting a culture of inclusivity. The company has not yet issued a formal response to the ongoing discussions surrounding the appointment.
The situation serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding leadership transitions in increasingly diverse societies and the critical importance of fostering an inclusive environment in both corporate and public life.
