All Blacks Welcome Simon Parker as Key Addition for Argentina Tests

The All Blacks have named their squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship, welcoming back 1.97-meter, 120-kilogram loose forward Simon Parker. Parker’s inclusion comes after a standout season with the Chiefs, marking his first significant contribution since becoming a Super Rugby player. Unfortunately, an injury sidelined him from selection for the series against France, but now he emerges as a crucial asset for the All Blacks ahead of their challenging fixtures in Argentina.
Parker’s size and skill set could provide the missing piece in the All Blacks’ forward pack, which has shown some vulnerability in terms of physicality. Despite the exceptional talents of players like Ardie Savea and Wallace Sititi, the loose forward positions have lacked the bulk needed to compete against formidable opponents. Coach Scott Robertson has experimented with various combinations, notably shifting Tupou Vaa’i to blindside during the recent series against France.
Parker has drawn comparisons to Liam Squire, who was considered a long-term solution at blindside until his career was curtailed after just 23 tests. Both players share similar physical attributes, and there is hope that Parker will contribute more significantly. Robertson has evidently kept a close watch on Parker, indicating that his time to shine in test rugby is on the horizon.
The selection also includes six players serving as injury cover, with one expected to play a significant role in the upcoming tests. Injuries to Cam Roigard and Noah Hotham create a scenario where either Finlay Christie or Kyle Preston might take a spot on the bench, with Cortez Ratima stepping into the starting role. The fact that Ratima is now the most experienced halfback raises questions about tactical adjustments, possibly shifting focus to bolster the forward pack.
Another noteworthy addition is Leroy Carter, who has also had an impressive season with the Chiefs. His versatility has been evident, as he has played in the nine jersey at provincial level and recently excelled at centre for Bay of Plenty. Tevita Mafileo is included in the propping rotation after being part of a strong Hurricanes scrum, further adding depth to the squad.
With these adjustments, the All Blacks are preparing for what promises to be a demanding series in Argentina. The experience of players like Beauden Barrett, who will start at first five, and Will Jordan at fullback, provides a solid foundation. Scott Barrett returns to the pack, creating a competitive environment at lock.
The selection of Fabian Holland, Sititi’s comeback, and Peter Lakai‘s call-up could affect Vaa’i’s position, creating a strategic dilemma for Robertson. The tight five is increasingly balanced, presenting Robertson with beneficial options.
On the wing, Caleb Clarke and Sevu Reece are the starting players, yet Carter’s impressive speed might earn him a place among the starters. The forthcoming tests will not only test the depth of the All Blacks but could also shape public opinion on Robertson’s strategy as they prepare to face the formidable Pumas and Springboks, who are unlikely to be as lenient as France was during their recent series.
As the All Blacks gear up for these critical matches, the performance of new and returning players will be under the spotlight. This season could significantly influence both the team’s trajectory and the perception of Robertson’s leadership.
