Auckland Woman Discovers Stage 3 Cancer During IVF Journey
A 32-year-old woman from Auckland, identified as Jenna Ellen, received a shocking diagnosis of stage 3 Hodgkin lymphoma while undergoing her first round of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Ellen, who owns a salon, had been looking forward to starting a family with her partner of 16 years, Josh. This unexpected diagnosis has profoundly altered their plans for the future.
In early October 2023, Ellen initiated the IVF process, a significant step toward parenthood. However, as she prepared for treatment, she began experiencing concerning symptoms, including a persistent dry cough, a croaky voice, shortness of breath, and a feeling of tightness in her chest.
“I was looking forward to conceiving and hopefully being a mum. This just completely was not on our 2025 bingo card,” Ellen shared in an interview with the Daily Mail. She attributed some of her symptoms to her profession as a hairdresser, where she is often surrounded by the noise of dryers and the bustle of a busy salon. “I just thought it was normal,” she explained, reflecting on her decision to downplay her health concerns.
After a series of evaluations, medical professionals diagnosed her with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. The diagnosis came as a profound shock, particularly during a time when Ellen was focused on creating a family.
Ellen’s story highlights the importance of listening to one’s body and seeking medical attention when symptoms persist. Despite her initial dismissal of the symptoms, her diagnosis has prompted her to advocate for awareness regarding the signs of lymphoma, especially among young women.
While the couple adjusts to this unexpected turn of events, they are navigating the complexities of treatment and fertility. Ellen has expressed a desire to remain hopeful about their future family plans, despite the challenging road ahead.
The experience serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the resilience required to face such challenges. As Ellen embarks on her treatment journey, she hopes to share her story to inspire others to prioritize their health and well-being.
