Diane Calvert Announces Mayoral Bid for Wellington Elections

Wellington City councillor Diane Calvert has officially declared her intention to run for mayor in the upcoming elections scheduled for October 2023. This announcement marks a shift from her earlier position, where she had indicated a potential withdrawal from the race. Calvert’s decision follows two weeks of reflection regarding the current campaign environment, during which she expressed concerns about the overall tone and tactics being employed, as well as the perceived lack of focus on significant challenges facing the city.
Calvert highlighted the urgency of Wellington’s situation, stating, “Wellington is facing one of its most challenging and defining periods. The announcement of major reform of local government will have significant impact.” She emphasized that all councils, including Wellington, must refocus their efforts and reassess their core purposes in light of these impending changes.
In her campaign statement, Calvert outlined five core priorities that she believes are crucial for earning the trust of Wellingtonians ahead of the local elections. These priorities include improving the city’s roads, enhancing waste management, revitalizing public spaces, and fostering safer communities. She stated that these issues are critical to ensuring a sustainable and vibrant future for Wellington.
Calvert, who has served three terms as a councillor, aims to bring her experience to the mayoralty, particularly during a time when the city is navigating complex reforms and challenges. Her commitment to addressing these priorities reflects her understanding of the pressing needs of the community and her readiness to lead at this pivotal moment.
As the election approaches, Calvert’s campaign will likely focus on engaging with constituents to discuss her vision for Wellington and how she plans to tackle the significant issues at hand. With her extensive background in local governance, she is poised to position herself as a strong candidate in the race for mayor.
