Emergency services successfully coordinated a rescue operation for a diver off Goat Island Marine Reserve late on September 15, 2023. The incident underscores the vital role of the Kawau Coastguard, which operates around the clock to ensure safety in local waters.

Just after 21:00, the Kawau Coastguard received an urgent call regarding a diver who had become separated from his group. Concerned friends raised the alarm after they returned to shore without him. Following standard protocol, the Kawau Rescue unit was dispatched to the scene.

The situation quickly escalated as the diver was reported missing. Thelma Wilson, the skipper of Kawau Rescue, shared that the initial reports were alarming. Fortunately, an update soon arrived indicating that the Police Eagle helicopter had located the diver north of Goat Island. He was seen on the surface but was struggling to remain afloat.

“It was a remarkable outcome for a late-night rescue,” said Wilson. “With a light sou’wester behind us, we made excellent time to the scene. The Eagle remained overhead, and the diver also used his torch to guide us in.”

Upon reaching the diver, the crew conducted checks for signs of hypothermia and exhaustion. Remarkably, thanks to a quality wetsuit and good equipment, he was found to be in relatively good condition despite his time in the water.

Coordination among the Kawau Coastguard, police, and St John Ambulance was essential throughout the operation. The teams confirmed that an ambulance was not needed, and the diver was safely returned to his friends waiting at Leigh Wharf.

The entire operation lasted just one hour and 45 minutes. In case additional support was required, Hibiscus Rescue 1 from Whangaparāoa was also mobilised.

After successfully completing the mission, the rescue boat and crew returned to Sandspit around midnight. Wilson expressed her appreciation for the teamwork displayed during the incident. “It was a great result,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of community support in such operations.

The Kawau Coastguard is actively seeking new volunteers to join their team. Potential crew members should be reasonably fit, reside within 20 minutes of Sandspit, and enjoy collaborative work. The unit also welcomes assistance for fundraising and events such as the annual Kawau Coastguard golf day.
