New Flats to Enhance Care Village Facilities Near Napier

A care village designed for individuals with mental health issues and drug addiction is set to expand with the addition of new facilities in Napier. The Kahukura Project, managed by the Whatever It Takes Trust, will introduce 10 new flats, enhancing its capacity for supervised residents. Construction is scheduled to commence immediately, with the new facilities expected to be operational by 2024.

At a site blessing ceremony attended by approximately 20 community members on Wednesday, John Sproat, deputy chair of the trust, announced that contracts for the expansion had been signed. The development will take place on Riverbend Rd, strategically located between Maraenui and Meeanee, adjacent to where the original units were opened in 2011.

According to Sam Aberahama, chief executive of the trust, the additional units will facilitate a smoother transition for residents towards more independent living. This expansion aims to provide a supportive environment while addressing the ongoing needs of the community and its residents.

The initial establishment of the care village faced opposition from some local residents, who expressed concerns about safety and potential anti-social behavior associated with the facility. Despite these challenges, the project has remained committed to fostering a safe and nurturing environment for its residents.

With more land available for future options, the expansion of the Kahukura Project reflects a growing recognition of the importance of such facilities in supporting vulnerable populations. The initiative indicates a significant step forward in enhancing mental health support services in the region, as well as addressing community concerns through active engagement and development.
