Mitre 10 Celebrates Five Years of Diwali Nationwide

Mitre 10 is celebrating the fifth consecutive year of Diwali festivities across New Zealand, bringing the festival’s spirit of joy, unity, and belonging to communities nationwide. What started in Auckland has expanded significantly, reflecting the growth of Indian communities throughout the country and embracing the diverse cultural landscape that characterizes New Zealand today.
Diwali has become an integral part of the Mitre 10 experience since 2021, featuring vibrant in-store displays, Hindi music, traditional sweets, and cultural education initiatives aimed at both staff and customers. In preparation for this year’s celebrations, stores will receive festive kits that include greeting posters, floral garlands, and other decorations.
Community Engagement Initiatives
To engage families and children, Mitre 10 stores will host Easy As Kids workshops on October 19, 2023, the weekend before Diwali. These workshops will feature activities such as creating rangoli-shaped diyas, offering a culturally enriching experience that fosters family interaction.
Jules Lloyd-Jones, Chief Marketing Officer of Mitre 10, emphasized the importance of these events, stating, “Diwali or Deepavali is a beautiful opportunity to celebrate our culturally diverse team and wish one another good health, prosperity, and light.” This initiative not only promotes cultural awareness but also strengthens community ties.
Cultural Inclusion at Mitre 10
At the core of Mitre 10’s Diwali celebrations is a commitment to cultural inclusion. Lloyd-Jones remarked, “At Mitre 10, we celebrate what makes each person unique. Our aim is for every team member to feel proud of their own stories, backgrounds, and beliefs and to bring their whole self to work.” This inclusive philosophy is reflected in activities organized at the Support Centre, where staff participate in puja (Hindu prayer), share reflections, and enjoy traditional Indian treats, fostering a sense of belonging among employees.
As New Zealand’s cultural landscape continues to evolve, Mitre 10 is setting a commendable example by embracing the full spectrum of what it means to be Kiwi today. “We’re a proudly locally owned Kiwi brand,” Lloyd-Jones stated, reinforcing the company’s dedication to diversity and cultural celebration.
The Impact of Diwali Celebrations
Mitre 10’s Diwali celebrations not only highlight the significance of cultural diversity but also underscore the company’s mission to create inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcomed. By actively engaging both employees and customers in these festivities, Mitre 10 reinforces its commitment to community connection.
As Aotearoa prepares for the festival, Mitre 10’s initiatives exemplify a broader movement towards embracing cultural differences and fostering unity. The company’s efforts to celebrate Diwali serve as a reminder of the rich tapestry of cultures that enrich the New Zealand identity, allowing individuals to come together in celebration and understanding.
