Keven Souza, a 24-year-old Afro-Brazilian Kiwi actor and filmmaker, is sharing insights into his dating life through the web series D8Talk. The show features a diverse range of voices discussing modern relationships, with Souza providing a unique perspective as a bisexual individual.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Souza spent part of his childhood in Governador Valadares, Brazil. His parents emigrated from Brazil approximately 10 to 15 years prior to his birth, seeking better opportunities and a safer environment for their family. Souza reflects on this upbringing, explaining, “My mum was very intentional about where she wanted me to be born.” Raised by his grandparents for several years, he acknowledges the sacrifices his parents made to ensure a brighter future for him and his sister, Karen.

Living in the suburb of Mt Roskill with five flatmates, many of whom are also involved in creative fields, Souza finds constant inspiration in his environment. He describes the atmosphere as one that fosters creativity and collaboration, essential for his artistic pursuits.

Souza’s journey into acting began unexpectedly. Initially aspiring to become a lawyer, he prayed daily while attending a religious school. The pivotal moment came when he was cast in a theatre production portraying Jesus, a role that resonated with him deeply. “I felt like my prayers were answered,” he recalls, adding that the experience of performing in front of an audience filled him with energy and enthusiasm.

After moving to Auckland to pursue acting, Souza enrolled in the Actor’s Programme, a one-year intensive course, in 2022. He marked 2023 as a significant year, landing his first recurring role shortly thereafter. His involvement with D8Talk came about when a producer invited him to participate in the series, which offers a platform for six selected individuals to share their experiences with modern dating.

Souza’s background plays a crucial role in shaping his views on relationships. He notes the contrast between Brazil’s large LGBTQ+ population and its prevailing homophobic culture. This dichotomy has influenced his approach to masculinity and femininity, allowing him to embrace a balance of both. He credits the strong women in his life, particularly his grandmother and aunties, for this perspective.

Looking ahead, Souza expresses a desire to explore opportunities beyond New Zealand. While he appreciates the connections he’s made in Auckland, he feels that the local industry lacks diversity and representation. “New Zealand has a long way to catch up,” he states, indicating a longing to move to Sydney as a stepping stone towards broader horizons, including aspirations to work in places like the United States or Canada.
