Local Authors Showcase Talent at Inaugural Matakana Book Festival

Book lovers are set to celebrate the literary arts at the inaugural Matakana Book Festival, which kicks off with a Gala Event at Matakana Cinemas on October 18, 2023. The festival aims to elevate the profiles of local authors while engaging the community in a weekend of storytelling and creativity.

The gala will feature six acclaimed authors who will share insights into their writing journeys and participate in a dynamic Q&A session. Among the presenters are crime novelist Madeleine Eskedahl, non-fiction writer Maria Gill, historical fiction author Hugh Major, picture book creator Sharon Fergusson, food writer and columnist Lauraine Jacobs, and poet Rachel Ray.

According to Maria Gill, who also serves as the chair of the NZ Society of Authors Auckland, the festival is designed to celebrate local literature and foster a sense of community. She expressed her vision for the festival, stating, “We think the festival has the potential to grow into something special, incorporating poetry and sketching outings, illustration and writing workshops, and talks from New Zealand authors from further afield.” Gill also hopes to encourage greater participation from local schools.

The evening event will be supported by various local businesses, including Bayleys in the North, which is contributing to the festival’s festive atmosphere. Attendees can look forward to a specially crafted tequila-based cocktail called The Book Worm, designed for the occasion.

The festival will also host several book launches and presentations. Madeleine Eskedahl will introduce her latest crime thriller, Angels of Clay, while Rachel Ray and Sharon Fergusson will unveil their new works, Seraphine and Colin the Curious Cabbage, respectively. Hugh Major will discuss his recent novel, While Hearts Count Our Forevers, released in June. Gill had planned to launch her latest work, A Flame in the Dark, about World War II heroine Nancy Wake, but publication is now postponed until March 2024.

The festival will continue throughout the weekend, offering free events suitable for readers of all ages. Highlights include a session for children at Mahurangi East Library on October 18 from 11:00 to 12:00, featuring Maria Gill, Sharon Fergusson, and authors Maria Artho and Tania Sickling. An adult author session will take place at Warkworth Library on October 19 from 13:15 to 14:15.
