The health ministry of Tonga recently launched its National Mental Health Strategy and Policy at Vaiola Hospital, marking a significant step in enhancing mental health services throughout the nation. Health officials hailed the initiative as a milestone aimed at improving coordination and access to mental health care. According to the nation’s head psychiatrist, Dr Mapa Puloka, “mental health is everyone’s responsibility.”

A national survey conducted earlier this year revealed troubling statistics: approximately six percent of Tongans reported experiencing notable psychological distress, yet a staggering 96 percent had never sought mental health care. The study also indicated that none of the individuals diagnosed with depression had previously consulted a mental health professional. Mental health issues in Tonga are often complicated by stigma and limited access to services, particularly in the outer islands.

AI’s Potential in Healthcare Across the Pacific

In a related development, the World Health Organization (WHO) regional director for the Western Pacific, Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala, emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in alleviating pressure on health systems. He stated that if AI is utilized ethically and equitably, it could help bridge gaps in healthcare delivery across the region, bringing the Western Pacific closer to achieving universal health coverage.

Dr Piukala highlighted practical applications, such as generating patient education materials in local languages and assisting overworked healthcare staff with documentation tasks. Member states are set to discuss the responsible integration of AI into health systems at the upcoming 76th WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific.

Maritime Developments and Political Updates

On another front, a commission has provided recommendations regarding the Cook Islands‘ submission to safeguard the Manihiki Plateau. This underwater geological formation lies within the Cook Islands’ Exclusive Economic Zone and extends into international waters. The recommendations enable the Cook Islands to formalize the outer limits of its continental shelf, potentially adding approximately 350,000 square kilometers to its maritime jurisdiction under international law.

In Tuvalu, Prime Minister Feleti Teo expressed admiration for Taiwan during celebrations for Taiwan’s National Day in Funafuti. He lauded Taiwan’s innovation and democratic values, noting their shared challenges as small island nations, particularly concerning climate change and geopolitical pressures. Teo reaffirmed Tuvalu’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with Taiwan, which has spanned over four decades.

In political news from Tonga, Prince Kalaniuvalu Fotofili has emerged as an early victor in the upcoming elections, having been confirmed as the sole candidate for his noble seat. The general election is scheduled for November 20, 2023, during which voters will elect 17 People’s Representatives and nine noble representatives. With no competition for the Niuas islands, Prince Fotofili will serve another four-year term.

Meanwhile, Fiji celebrated its Independence Day with President Ratu Lalabalavu meeting Fijians in the United Kingdom. The President and his wife visited Swinton Barracks in Tidworth, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of London. He expressed gratitude to the UK government and its people for the opportunities provided to Fijians in the British Armed Forces. During a talanoa session with the Fijian community, he shared updates on various government programs.

These developments reflect ongoing efforts in the Pacific region to address health, environmental, and political challenges while fostering international partnerships and cooperation.
