The small town of Duntroon in North Otago is marking its 150th anniversary with a series of events scheduled for March 16-17, 2024. The celebrations promise to bring together both residents and visitors for a weekend filled with activities that reflect the town’s rich history.

Owen King, chairman of the Duntroon and District Development Association, expressed excitement about the preparations. He noted that organizers have been busy planning but did not require registration for attendees. As a result, they are uncertain about the expected turnout, estimating it could range from 150 to 250 participants. King stated, “That’s what we’ve sort of catered for, but we’ve got things in place if we do get blown out with huge amounts.”

The day’s festivities will kick off with an arts and crafts market starting at 10:00 AM on Saturday. Simultaneously, the Duntroon Hall will showcase a collection of historic photos and media that highlight the town’s past. This will provide attendees with a visual narrative of Duntroon’s journey over the past century and a half.

In addition to the market, the inaugural heritage trail tour will guide participants to six significant historical sites within the town. A horse-drawn carriage will accompany the tour, adding a nostalgic touch to the experience. This unique offering aims to immerse visitors in Duntroon’s storied past.

The following day, Sunday, March 17, will commence with a special service at St Martin’s Church at 11:30 AM. This will be followed by the planting of a totara tree, symbolizing growth and continuity for future generations.

The weekend’s celebrations will conclude with a luncheon and cake-cutting ceremony at the Duntroon Hall, allowing all participants to gather and reflect on the day’s events. Throughout the weekend, local attractions such as the Vanished World Centre, Nicol’s Blacksmith shop, and the Duntroon Hotel will remain open, inviting guests to explore and enjoy the town’s offerings.

As Duntroon celebrates this significant milestone, the community looks forward to embracing its history while welcoming new friends and memories. The events promise to be a blend of education, nostalgia, and community spirit, showcasing the best of what this historic town has to offer.
