Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis Headline Armageddon Expo’s 30th Anniversary

Two prominent stars from the iconic The Lord of the Rings film series, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis, are set to make a highly anticipated return to Auckland for the Armageddon Expo’s 30th anniversary. The event, which is New Zealand’s largest pop culture expo, will take place in October 2023.
Event founder Bill Geradts expressed his excitement, calling this anniversary celebration “the most epic pop culture event held in New Zealand since The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King premiere in 2003.” The expo is expected to attract thousands of fans, eager to engage with their favorite stars and immerse themselves in a vibrant atmosphere of fandom.
Stars Reunite for a Special Occasion
Both Wood and Serkis are renowned for their roles in the beloved trilogy, with Wood portraying the courageous Frodo Baggins and Serkis bringing the complex character of Gollum to life through groundbreaking motion capture technology. Their participation in the expo marks a significant reunion for fans of the series, who have cherished these characters for nearly two decades.
In addition to attending the Armageddon Expo, Serkis is also slated to return to New Zealand in 2024 to direct and star in the upcoming project, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. This new production is expected to draw further interest from fans eager for more stories set in the Middle-earth universe.
A Celebration of Pop Culture
The Armageddon Expo, which has been a staple of New Zealand’s entertainment landscape since its inception, celebrates a wide range of pop culture phenomena, including comics, gaming, anime, and film. This year’s event promises to be particularly special, as it not only commemorates three decades of the expo but also highlights the lasting impact of The Lord of the Rings on global cinema and fandom.
With a lineup featuring various panels, workshops, and merchandise stalls, attendees can expect an immersive experience that pays homage to the diverse interests of pop culture enthusiasts. The presence of high-profile guests like Wood and Serkis adds a layer of excitement, making it a must-see event for fans both locally and internationally.
The Armageddon Expo’s 30th anniversary is poised to be a landmark occasion, celebrating not just the legacy of The Lord of the Rings but also the vibrant community of fans and creators that continue to thrive in New Zealand and beyond.
