Local Runner Completes 161.8km Challenge for Gut Cancer Awareness

Ōrewa resident Neville Modlin recently completed an impressive challenge, running 161.8 kilometers in just under 24 hours to raise awareness and funds for gut cancer. This endeavor was a tribute to his father, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer just six weeks after his diagnosis. The rapid progression of his father’s illness highlighted the urgent need for awareness surrounding this disease, which has become one of the deadliest cancers in New Zealand, with an alarming 88 percent of diagnosed patients not surviving beyond five years.
The journey began in late November 2024, when Neville’s father casually mentioned feeling “a little under the weather.” Within days, the family was navigating the harsh realities of cancer treatment and planning for end-of-life care. “The speed that everything progressed for my dad was totally unexpected,” Neville reflected, noting the rapid changes that left the family scrambling for answers and support.
Community Support Amplifies the Challenge
In response to his loss, Neville transformed his grief into action by participating in The Gut Cancer Foundation’s #GutsyForGutCancer challenge. This initiative aims to raise funds and increase awareness for Kiwis battling gut cancer. “What began as a personal challenge became a public journey. I never expected the magnitude of what unfolded,” he shared. Even during the early hours of the morning, local runners joined him, showcasing the strong community spirit in Ōrewa.
Neville’s efforts not only garnered emotional support but also led to significant financial backing, with fundraising efforts surpassing their initial target by nearly sixfold. The community rallied around Neville and his family, demonstrating that collective action can make a meaningful impact.
Understanding Gut Cancer and Its Impact
Like many New Zealanders, Neville was initially unaware of the complexities surrounding gut cancers. “Because he went downhill so fast, there was little support. We were figuring it out one day at a time,” he noted. According to Liam Willis, Executive Officer of the Gut Cancer Foundation (GCF), gut cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in New Zealand, with over 6,100 new diagnoses each year. Tragically, eight Kiwis die from gut cancer daily.
The GCF plays a crucial role in funding innovative research and addressing barriers to treatment. The organization is focused on improving patient care by developing a support network for those affected by gut cancers. Liam emphasized the need for better resources, stating that the GCF has created an online hub containing comprehensive information for patients and their families. “We are committed to developing this service to ensure we meet the need of our community so no one has to face a gut cancer diagnosis alone,” he said.
Generous donations and community support enable the GCF to provide New Zealanders access to international clinical trials. By raising awareness of the signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with gut cancer, the foundation aims to promote earlier detection, which can significantly improve survival rates.
Neville’s journey serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of community and awareness in the fight against gut cancer. To learn more about his 161.8km challenge and support the cause, visit https://gutsy-for-gut-cancer.raisely.com/neville-modlin.
