Young Kiwi Croquet Player Shines at U21 World Championships

Mattie Clarkson, the youngest member of the Howick Croquet Club, recently made her mark on the international stage by competing in the U21 GC World Championships held in Sarasota, Florida. At just 19 years old, Clarkson represented New Zealand among a diverse group of players from around the globe.

Exciting Tournament Overview

The tournament, which took place at the Sarasota Country Croquet Club, featured 28 players from 12 countries. According to Veneta Hansen of the Howick Croquet Club, this was the seventh edition of the championships, highlighting the growing appeal of croquet as a sport for all ages.

Clarkson participated alongside four other New Zealand players, all of whom advanced to the knockout stage after finishing at least third in their respective blocks. “This is an incredible result, having all five players in the final 16,” Hansen noted.

Despite Clarkson’s strong performance, she did not reach the finals of the competition, which was ultimately won by Levi Franks from Cashmere Croquet Club in Canterbury. The achievement of all five New Zealanders reaching the knockout stage underscores the nation’s competitive spirit in the sport.

A Memorable Experience

To fund her trip, Clarkson worked diligently to raise the necessary money, making her participation a personal achievement. She collected memorabilia, including hat badges and shirts, which will serve as lasting reminders of her accomplishments. “She also has a clipping from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, featuring her and her mascot, Howie, although she was mistakenly labelled ‘English’,” Hansen remarked.

Now back on New Zealand soil, Clarkson is eager to continue honing her skills and preparing for future competitions. Her journey reflects the dedication and passion that young athletes bring to their sports, inspiring others in the croquet community.

As she looks forward to her next challenge, Clarkson’s journey illustrates the potential of young athletes to shine on the world stage, regardless of the sport.
