Geraldine High School Basketball Team Fundraises for Nationals

The senior A boys basketball team from Geraldine High School is embarking on an unexpected journey to the national championship, following their qualification at a recent tournament. With less than a month before the event takes place on the North Island, the team has initiated a scrap metal collection drive to help fund their trip.

The team secured their spot among the twelve competing teams in their category, consisting of seven from the North Island and five from the South Island. They are one of only two teams from South Canterbury participating, alongside the Waimate High School girls team, which qualified after winning the Southern Cup on the same weekend.

Point guard Ethan Hole expressed pride in the team’s performance, noting that despite not winning the tournament, they achieved a commendable record of 7-1. The team had the distinction of defeating the eventual champions in an earlier match, showcasing their competitive spirit. The tournament format ensured that teams faced opponents of similar size, providing a fair playing field for all.

Community Support Drives Fundraising Efforts

With the national competition fast approaching, fundraising spokesperson Michelle Cramond emphasized the importance of community support. Although the team is eager to get to the event, they plan to continue collecting scrap metal once they return to help “recover costs.” Cramond encouraged anyone with scrap metal to contact the school office. A Google document has been set up to facilitate donations, allowing the team to identify materials on collection day.

The boys are willing to collect various items, including corrugated iron, old engines, and agricultural equipment, stating, “They’re big strapping lads,” in reference to their ability to help lift heavier items.

Team member Cayden Halsey highlighted the significance of community involvement, stating that donations would demonstrate local support for the team. He remarked, “It is a big thing for Geraldine High School; it will put Geraldine on the map.”

Acknowledging Contributions and Future Aspirations

Cramond is currently investigating whether this is the first time the high school has reached a national basketball tournament. The school boasts a vibrant basketball program with 170 players between years 7 and 13, where senior players often coach younger athletes.

Point guard Dillan Sami conveyed the hope that participating in the national event will provide valuable experience that they can share with future players at the school.

The team also expressed gratitude toward their coach, David Taylor, whose expertise has been instrumental in their success. Support from the Geraldine Lions Club, which donated $1,000, and Freshchoice, which contributed $1,500 and is selling raffle tickets, has further bolstered their fundraising efforts. Additionally, a Givealittle page has been established to facilitate donations, enhancing community engagement and support for the team’s journey to the nationals.
