Black Ferns Elevate Kicking Skills with Dedicated Training Club

The New Zealand women’s rugby team, known as the Black Ferns, is intensifying its preparation for upcoming competitions through focused training on kicking skills. At the conclusion of their training sessions, a group of six players consistently remains on the field to complete their kicking drills. This initiative, dubbed the Kicking Club, is spearheaded by backs and skills coach Riki Flutey, who emphasizes the importance of this specialized practice.
Flutey highlights the commitment of these athletes, stating, “We train it every day, mate. And the girls are really confident now to pull the trigger when they see the space with the kicking game.” The Kicking Club includes key players such as fullbacks Renee Holmes and Braxton Sorensen-McGee, first five-eighths Ruahei Demant and Kelly Brazier, as well as halfbacks Risaleaana Pouri-Lane and Maia Joseph.
Enhancing Game Strategy and Confidence
The focus on kicking is a strategic move aimed at enhancing the team’s overall game performance. By dedicating extra time to refine their kicking abilities, the Black Ferns aim to develop a more versatile approach on the field. This initiative not only bolsters individual skills but also fosters teamwork, as players learn to anticipate each other’s moves and create scoring opportunities.
The Black Ferns have already demonstrated their prowess on the international stage, and the commitment to the Kicking Club indicates a desire to build on their success. Training sessions have become a critical aspect of their preparation, with the Kicking Club functioning as a vital component of their strategy development.
Looking Ahead to Future Competitions
As they prepare for upcoming tournaments, the emphasis on kicking could prove pivotal. The ability to effectively execute strategic kicks can shift the momentum of a match and create significant scoring opportunities. Flutey’s coaching philosophy encourages players to take initiative on the field, fostering an environment where athletes feel empowered to make decisive plays.
The Black Ferns’ dedication to refining their kicking skills reflects their commitment to excellence and their determination to compete at the highest level. With ongoing training and the support of their coaching staff, the team is poised to make a significant impact in future competitions, showcasing the results of their hard work and dedication.
