Ōmokoroa Family Celebrates First Homeownership Through Shared Ownership

Naomi and Darcy Gilbert have transitioned from rural renting to homeownership, marking a significant milestone for their family. They became the first residents of the Housing Foundation’s shared ownership development in Ōmokoroa, located near Tauranga, New Zealand. This program offers families a pathway to buy a home through a shared ownership model, making homeownership more accessible.
The Gilberts, who are parents to a blended family of nine children, officially moved into their new four-bedroom home in July 2023. This transition not only represents a new beginning for the couple but also provides a stable environment for their children. Four of their children visit every third weekend, which adds to the lively atmosphere of their new residence.
“We’ve absolutely loved it,” Naomi Gilbert told the Bay of Plenty Times, expressing their enthusiasm about their new living arrangements. The shared ownership scheme allows families like the Gilberts to invest in a property while managing their financial commitments more effectively.
The Housing Foundation aims to address the challenges of homeownership in New Zealand, particularly for families who may struggle to afford a home outright. By offering a shared ownership option, the organization provides a practical solution for those looking to enter the housing market without the burden of full ownership costs.
As New Zealand faces increasing housing pressures, initiatives like the one in Ōmokoroa are crucial for families seeking stability. The Gilberts’ experience highlights the potential benefits of such schemes, emphasizing that homeownership can be within reach for families willing to explore alternative pathways.
This successful transition from renting to owning is a testament to the positive impact of innovative housing solutions in communities across New Zealand.
