Rising Funeral Costs Strain New Zealand Families’ Budgets
The cost of funerals in New Zealand has seen a significant increase, adding financial pressure to families already grappling with the rising cost of living. According to Brent Ruru, director of Everything Funeral, the average expense for a complete funeral, which often includes a service followed by cremation or burial, now ranges from $16,000 to $18,000. This substantial figure highlights the growing financial burden associated with saying goodbye to loved ones.
Many factors contribute to these escalating costs. Ruru explained during an interview with Nadine Higgins on The Prosperity Project podcast that funeral directors impose a professional services fee. This base fee is compounded by various additional expenses. Families must consider costs for casket selection, venue hire, catering services, photo montages, service sheets, newspaper notices, floral arrangements, and even the fees for engaging a celebrant. There may also be added expenses for live streaming the funeral, which has become increasingly common in recent years.
Understanding Funeral Expenses
The financial implications of planning a funeral can be overwhelming. Ruru emphasized that costs can accumulate quickly, leaving families with unexpected bills during an already difficult time. “It’s important for families to be aware of what they are paying for,” he noted. Transparency in pricing is essential, yet many families find themselves uncertain about the total expenses involved.
Funeral planning can often feel daunting, especially when families are navigating the emotional turmoil of loss. Ruru suggests that individuals should take the time to research and compare options. “Understanding the various components of a funeral can help families make informed decisions,” he stated. By doing so, families can potentially reduce costs and avoid unnecessary expenditures.
In addition to understanding the components of a funeral, Ruru encourages families to consider pre-planning options. Pre-planning a funeral can not only ease the burden on family members but may also provide financial advantages. With pre-planning, individuals can lock in current prices and avoid future price increases.
Looking Ahead
As funeral costs continue to rise, it is crucial for New Zealanders to be proactive in their planning. Families should engage with funeral service providers to gain clarity on what services are necessary and which ones can be adjusted or omitted to fit their budget.
The experience shared by Ruru serves as a reminder that preparing for the end of life is not merely about the emotional aspects but also involves careful financial consideration. By becoming informed and prepared, families can navigate the complexities of funeral planning in a more manageable way, ensuring that they honor their loved ones while also being mindful of their financial health.
With rising costs across various sectors, the conversation surrounding funeral expenses is increasingly relevant. Families can benefit from discussions about financial planning and transparency in service offerings, helping them make decisions that respect both their loved ones and their financial circumstances.
