Smart City Expo Doha Concludes, Shaping Urban Futures in MENA
Doha, Qatar: The Smart City Expo Doha concluded on November 26, 2023, after two days of intense discussions focused on leveraging technology to enhance urban living in the Middle East. This significant event, which highlights the future of urban development in the MENA region, is already planning its fifth edition, set for April 28–29, 2026.
Impact of Technology on Urban Development
The fourth edition of the Smart City Expo Doha, organized by Fira de Barcelona in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) of Qatar, centered on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in various sectors, including mobility, design, and urban management. Under the theme “Beyond connectivity: a digital solutions pathway to a smarter, thriving future,” the event welcomed over 30 international experts and featured notable keynote speakers. Among them were Kent Larson from MIT, who discussed tech-driven urban design, and H.E. Reem Al Mansoori, who outlined Qatar’s urban transformation strategy.
Another highlight was a motivational address by FIFA ambassador Ghanim Al-Muftah, who shared insights on resilience and inclusion, further enriching the event’s discourse.
Qatar’s Leadership in Smart Urban Development
This edition of the expo underscores Qatar’s pivotal role in advancing smart and sustainable urban development across the MENA region. Evidence of this leadership is visible in major national projects that actualize the country’s digital vision. Lusail City, one of the region’s most sophisticated smart city projects, incorporates real-time data systems, intelligent mobility solutions, and connected urban services, all aimed at improving quality of life and operational efficiency. Additionally, Msheireb Downtown Doha stands out as Qatar’s first fully realized smart and sustainable city district, blending digital innovation with energy efficiency and human-centered design.
These projects exemplify Qatar’s commitment to creating future-ready urban environments, aligning with the aspirations outlined in the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the nation’s Digital Agenda 2030.
This year, the Smart City Expo Doha was also featured at the MWC25 Doha, organized by the GSMA in collaboration with MCIT. This inaugural MWC event in the MENA region attracted nearly 300 thought leaders and over 250 exhibitors and sponsors over the course of two days, further highlighting the region’s growing importance in global discussions on technology and urban development.
The discussions and initiatives set forth at the Smart City Expo Doha indicate a strong commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in urban environments, marking a significant step toward a smarter future for cities across the Middle East.
