Arrowtown to Showcase Dramatisation of The Mary Cotter Tree

A community event in Arrowtown is set to bring to life the story behind the iconic Mary Cotter Tree through a theatrical performance next weekend. The play, based on the children’s book *The Mary Cotter Tree* by Dunedin author Tony Hanning, will be staged on September 20 and 21, 2024, at the Lakes District Museum.

The sycamore tree, which stands at the corner of the library, has a rich history. It was planted in 1867 by Irish immigrants Frances and Richard Cotter. Their daughter, Mary, was only 20 months old when the tree was planted. Legend has it that if she danced around the newly planted tree, it would be named after her. This cherished local landmark continues to flourish and serves as the inspiration for the upcoming play.

The production has been adapted by local resident Rozy Winstone, who also directs the performance. Winstone established the SkyTop Children’s Theatre in Arrowtown last year to enhance local dramatic arts. She is passionate about the arts and is a member of the Arrowtown Autumn Festival committee.

Winstone shared her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The planting of the Buckingham St avenue resonates very strongly with me.” The play will begin at 11:30 AM each day, with audiences asked to gather at the museum’s front steps. Attendees will be divided into three groups, each led to different sets by children acting as guides.

The event has received support from the Central Lakes Art Support Scheme, highlighting its significance to the local community. Winstone is also collaborating with Arrowtown sculptor Fiona Garlick, who incorporates sycamore seed motifs in her artwork, further connecting the performance to the area’s artistic heritage.

Tickets for the play are priced at $10 for adults, while children can attend for free. Proceeds will benefit the Lakes District Museum, aligning with the community’s commitment to preserving its history. Tickets are available for purchase at the museum.
