Inclusive Activity Murihiku Hosts Thrilling iAM Games in Invercargill

The third annual iAM Games took place in Invercargill on September 30 and October 1, 2023, showcasing a wide range of adapted sports for young people with disabilities. Organized by Inclusive Activity Murihiku (iAM), the event aimed to provide an inclusive environment for participants aged 5 to 21 who have physical or intellectual impairments, visual or hearing impairments, or are neurodiverse.

The two-day festival highlighted various sports activities, allowing participants to engage in a supportive atmosphere. Gemma O’Neill, the Spaces and Places Lead at Active Southland, expressed enthusiasm about the event’s impact on young volunteers and participants alike. O’Neill’s 11-year-old son volunteered for the first time, assisting with logistics and promoting the event to families.

In his role, he ensured that bus routes ran smoothly, making sure that the correct information was displayed in the windows for participants boarding and disembarking. His efforts contributed to a seamless experience for attendees, who were shuttled to venues including Southland Cricket, Southland Hockey, Deep South Archery, and ILT Stadium Southland.

Notably, the event was not only about logistics; it also fostered excitement. O’Neill’s son took on the role of a “hype man,” energizing families and participants as they arrived for their activities. Observing the joy on the faces of young athletes as they engaged in sports tailored to their needs brought him immense satisfaction.

The event proceeded without disruption, despite the unpredictable Southland Spring weather. Families left with smiles, having witnessed their children thrive in an inclusive environment. The day concluded with many tired but happy children, and one proud 11-year-old who was eager to volunteer again next year.

The iAM Games exemplified the power of community involvement and the positive impact of volunteering.
