Auckland Producers Transform Home into Functional Family Haven
In Grey Lynn, Auckland, television producers Bronwynn and Cameron Bakker have successfully transformed their family home into a modern, functional space that reflects both their personal style and professional demands. The couple purchased the property in late 2016 and have since made significant renovations to accommodate their growing family and the needs of their television production company, Kevin & Co.
The Bakker family home showcases the architectural charm of early 20th-century New Zealand villas, including spacious rooms and high ceilings. However, the couple has enhanced the traditional design with a massive kitchen integrated into their open-plan living area. This kitchen, conceptualized by Melanie Sa’u of Melanie Sa’u Design Studio, was a response to the limitations of the previous layout, which lacked both space and storage.
Initially drawn to the house for its potential, Bronwynn recalls, “We looked at it on a Sunday and bought it on the Tuesday.” Their swift decision came after living in a smaller workers’ cottage, and they were eager for a space that would support both their professional and personal lives. Since moving in, they have welcomed two children, son Fred, aged 4, and daughter Harry, aged 2, alongside their pet dog, Kevin.
The couple’s production company, established in 2018, has produced notable shows such as Taskmaster (New Zealand and Australia) and New Zealand Today. Juggling a busy family life with the demands of running a television production company has pushed the Bakkers to prioritize functionality in their home renovations.
Designing for Family Life
The kitchen renovation stands out as a central feature of the home. The new design includes an ultra-large island with a built-in table, making it a perfect gathering spot for their family. “We wanted something in keeping with the house, but a little more different, and a little more modern,” Bronwynn explains. The cabinetry features a combination of dark Melteca Melamine Borders Oak and paler Seasoned Oak veneers, giving it a contemporary yet warm feel.
The Bakkers aimed for a kitchen that not only served as a cooking area but also as a significant part of their living space. They turned what was once a neglected corner into a sunlit nook perfect for relaxation. “The area beside a new window seat is no longer a ‘junk space’, but a place to relax in the sun with a coffee,” Bronwynn adds.
While the couple initially considered adding a scullery, they opted against it to avoid structural changes. Instead, they created a cubby space within the cabinetry, effectively maximizing storage without compromising the layout.
Balancing Functionality and Aesthetic
The Bakkers have continued to enhance their home’s functionality by gradually double-glazing windows, starting with the bedrooms. They have also undertaken extensive landscaping, which includes a new pool and timber deck surrounded by tropical plants. This transformation has made the outdoor space more usable, particularly for their children.
Bronwynn and Cameron have embraced a philosophy of living with children that prioritizes fun over perfection. “My mum was an early childhood teacher, and she says they need stuff out, then you can rotate the toys,” Bronwynn shares. This approach fosters creativity for their children, allowing them to engage freely with their surroundings.
The couple enjoys the proximity of their home to local amenities, including Grey Lynn Park and various cafes. They regularly visit popular spots like Prego for family dinners and Dizengoff for coffee breaks.
Reflecting on their home life, Bronwynn states, “It all just works for where we are in our life right now.” Their home is not just a renovation project; it is a living space that accommodates the chaos of family life while serving as a hub for their creative endeavors.
As the Bakker family continues to grow and evolve, they express excitement about future renovations, particularly focusing on enhancing their art collection. “You can’t get enough of a good piece of art,” Cameron concludes, emphasizing the couple’s commitment to creating a home that nurtures creativity and family togetherness.
