Big Live’s Dracula Ballet Dazzles with Gothic Intensity
Big Live’s latest production, a ballet adaptation of the classic horror tale, Dracula, captivated audiences with its dramatic storytelling and haunting choreography. This performance took place in Dunedin and featured a blend of renowned classical music, including pieces from Tchaikovsky and Debussy, seamlessly woven together by composer Toby Alexander. The production not only lived up to expectations but also set a new standard for ballet’s darker themes.
Gothic Aesthetics Enhance Dark Narrative
Designed by Eric Luchen, the set was a visual feast, perfectly embodying the gothic elements of the story. The lighting played a crucial role, creating shadows that added depth and intensity to the performance. This retelling of the infamous tale of Vlad the Impaler explored his transformation into a vampire following the tragic death of his wife, bringing an emotional weight to the stage.
The titular character, Dracula, was portrayed by Ervin Zagidullin, who delivered a powerful performance characterized by a commanding presence. Unlike traditional ballet heroes, Dracula’s dark persona created a compelling contrast against the newlyweds, Jonathon and Mina, portrayed by Abbey Hansen. Hansen’s ethereal quality and graceful movements provided moments of levity amidst the overarching darkness.
Haunting Performances Stand Out
The production’s standout features included the ensemble of Ghosts, comprising Giselle Osborne, Rose Maloney, Mia Zanardo, and Bella Collishaw. Their haunting portrayal of Dracula’s tormented victims was mesmerizing. The dancers moved in captivating unison, while still showcasing individual talent, creating a chilling effect on the audience.
Joel Burke, the Artistic Director and co-founder of Big Live, has successfully established a dynamic company of international dancers. The performance received a warm reception, with a sizable audience attending the Sunday show, indicating a growing interest in innovative ballet productions. The hope remains that this will not be the last opportunity to experience Big Live’s remarkable work.
Rich in intensity and gothic drama, this production of Dracula offered a unique experience for ballet enthusiasts. It is a performance that allows the dancers to fully immerse themselves in their roles, making it a must-see for those who appreciate the art form at its most compelling.
