Lucy Lawless Demands Accountability After Cat Co-Star Shot
Lucy Lawless is advocating for justice following the shooting of her feline co-star, Zeplyn, in the television series My Life Is Murder. The incident has drawn significant attention, prompting Lawless to call for the prosecution of those responsible. Zeplyn, a five-year-old ginger Maine Coon cat, has played the character Chowder in the series since its production moved to New Zealand from Australia in 2020.
The distressing situation came to light shortly after filming for the show’s fifth season concluded in May 2023. Zeplyn’s owners, Camille Courtois and Leda Taylor, noticed troubling signs when he began limping on his back leg and dragging his tail. “We noticed he was limping on his back leg and his tail was dragging,” Courtois recounted, as reported by the Herald.
Lawless, who has portrayed the sharp-witted private investigator Alexa Crowe since the show’s inception in 2019, expressed her outrage over the incident. She described the act as “brutish” and emphasized the need for accountability for those involved in the shooting.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the safety of animals used in film and television productions. Lawless’s demand for justice highlights not only the personal connection she has with her co-star but also the responsibility filmmakers and society hold in protecting vulnerable creatures.
Authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the shooting, but Lawless’s public outcry may contribute to a heightened awareness of animal welfare issues within the entertainment industry. The community in West Auckland is rallying around Zeplyn and his owners, offering support and solidarity during this difficult time.
As the investigation progresses, many are calling for stricter regulations to ensure the safety of animals on set. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical practices in the entertainment industry, particularly concerning the treatment of animals.
With Lawless at the forefront of this campaign for justice, it is clear that the bond between actors and their animal co-stars can extend beyond the screen, fostering a sense of responsibility that resonates with audiences worldwide.
