Mild Orange Celebrates Independence with New Album The//Glow

Mild Orange, the band formed by friends from Otago University, has released their new album, The//Glow, marking a significant moment in their artistic journey. Following the success of their 2018 debut, Foreplay, which garnered widespread acclaim in the United States, the band’s tracks like ‘Some Feeling’ and ‘Freak In Me’ have achieved streams in the tens of millions. Their latest work pays homage to both the vibrant nightlife of London and heartland rock, which has accompanied them during countless drives across America for performances.
The transition from New Zealand to a bustling metropolis like London presented challenges for the band members, but they have embraced the change. “Moving here was quite an adjustment,” says lead vocalist Mehrtens, reflecting on their experiences since relocating in 2022. Now, three years later, they appreciate the “strong” live music scene that London offers.
Embracing Independence in the Music Industry
Identifying themselves as an “internet band,” Mild Orange operates outside the traditional music industry framework, which often involves signing with record labels. This independence has led to a mostly positive and supportive experience within the online music community. “Over the years, we’ve cultivated a lovely listenership and made an effort to connect with people in all corners of the earth,” Mehrtens notes. The band takes pride in being a Kiwi group whose music resonates globally.
As an independent entity, the members value the ability to steer their creative direction without external pressures. “Maybe [record] labels are scared to talk to us or something,” jokes Mehrtens, emphasizing the freedom they enjoy in their music-making process. While they do not confine themselves to a specific genre, they strive to innovate continuously. “We just write how we feel or reflect on what we’ve been living at the time,” he explains.
Their new track, ‘My Light’, showcases this commitment to creativity. In the song, Mehrtens explores themes of digital media and personal reflection. Although it features only two chords, the complexity of the composition adds depth, making the creative process challenging yet rewarding. “I’m so glad we persisted with it – it’s a bit of a banger,” he shares.
A Personal Touch in Musical Creations
The song also serves as a heartfelt tribute to Mehrtens’ wife, Summer. “The weight of the world can get a bit intense sometimes, but she’s always there for me,” he expresses. This personal connection infuses their music with authenticity, allowing listeners to engage with their experiences.
As Mild Orange continues to thrive in London’s dynamic music scene, their journey reflects the power of friendship, creativity, and independence. With a growing global audience, the band is poised to leave a lasting impact on the music landscape, one heartfelt song at a time.
