New Plymouth is set to host a national rock and mineral show during Labour Weekend, from October 25 to October 27, 2024. The event will take place at the Plymouth International Hotel and promises a diverse array of exhibits, competitions, and activities designed to engage both enthusiasts and the general public.

While the show will feature numerous stunning specimens, it will notably exclude what collectors refer to as “leaverite” rocks. According to Annette Larsen, a member of the Taranaki Lapidary and Mineral Club and editor of the club’s newsletter, these rocks are often collected with excitement by newcomers to the hobby. “Then when they show them to a more experienced friend, they’re told they’re leaverite,” she explained, indicating the phrase means “leave it right there”—essentially, it’s just a common rock.

The Larsens, who have been involved in rock collecting for around 16 years, travel across New Zealand seeking out unique rocks to polish and display. Their passion for fossicking has inspired many in the local community, including club treasurer Rob Booth, who outlined the three main types of members within the club.

Booth noted that some members focus on polishing and displaying rocks, while others are primarily interested in fossils. The Taranaki region is particularly rich in fossil finds, making it an attractive location for this pursuit. Additionally, there are members like Booth and his wife Carole, who specialize in crafting jewellery. Their pieces often feature rhyolite, a silica-rich volcanic rock known for its unique patterns and textures.

The upcoming show will showcase the work of approximately 40 exhibitors, who have submitted a total of 135 entries across eight categories of competition. Attendees can look forward to viewing 36 showcases of exhibits highlighting both natural specimens and crafted items, alongside stalls selling various rock-related products.

For families, there will be interactive activities including a lucky dip for children and a chance for them to extract rocks from blocks of ice, enhancing the experience for young attendees.

The Taranaki Rock, Mineral and Crystal Show is set to run daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with entry fees set at $5 for adults while children can enter for free. The event not only celebrates the beauty and diversity of rocks and minerals but also fosters community engagement and appreciation for this fascinating hobby.

This national gathering is a significant opportunity for rock enthusiasts and the general public alike to explore the world of geology and mineralogy while connecting with like-minded individuals from across the country.
