Oasis Guitars and Iconic Memorabilia Auctioned for $6.9 Million

Legendary music memorabilia, including guitars, glasses, and handwritten lyrics, will be auctioned in London this week, with an estimated total value of £6.9 million. Among the standout items is a cherry-red Gibson guitar owned by Noel Gallagher, which holds significant historical value due to its association with the tumultuous breakup of the iconic British band Oasis in 2009.
The guitar became infamous after it was damaged by Liam Gallagher during a backstage altercation on the night the band disbanded. In a statement made in 2011, Noel recounted how Liam stormed into the dressing room wielding the guitar “like an axe.” Music memorabilia specialist Mark Hochman, speaking to AFP at the auction preview hosted by Propstore, emphasized the guitar’s significance for fans. “It’s historic. If you’re an Oasis fan, you look at that guitar and you immediately know what it is,” Hochman noted.
Memorabilia Highlights and Auction Anticipation
The auction, taking place at Propstore in London, features a range of items from various artists, enhancing the excitement surrounding the event. Alongside Noel’s guitar, the auction includes personal items from other music legends, making it a treasure trove for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Hochman elaborated on the impact of Noel’s guitar, stating, “It caused the break-up of the band. Liam smashed it. Noel got in a taxi, and that was it for 16 years.” This incident not only marked the end of a significant era in music but also solidified the guitar’s place in rock history.
The auction is set to draw attention from collectors worldwide, with bids expected to escalate rapidly. The memorabilia market has seen a surge in interest, particularly for items tied to pivotal moments in music history. As fans eagerly anticipate the auction, the items available represent not just personal artifacts but also pieces of a larger cultural narrative.
The Significance of Music Memorabilia
Music memorabilia auctions have increasingly become platforms for celebrating and preserving the legacy of artists. Items like Noel Gallagher’s guitar serve as tangible connections to the past, allowing fans to own a piece of their favorite artist’s history. The emotional weight of such items often translates into significant financial value, as collectors are willing to invest heavily for a chance to own a piece of rock history.
As the auction draws near, the anticipation builds around how much these iconic items will fetch. The convergence of music fans, collectors, and the general public highlights the enduring impact of artists like Oasis on global culture. The upcoming sale at Propstore is not merely a transaction; it is a celebration of music and its profound influence on generations.
