NZ Breakers Defeat Tasmania JackJumpers, Secure Playoff Spot

The NZ Breakers have solidified their position in the Australian National Basketball League (ANBL) playoff race with a decisive 99-86 victory over the Tasmania JackJumpers at Spark Arena in Auckland. This win marks the Breakers’ fourth triumph in their last five games, propelling them into playoff contention for the first time this season.

From the outset, the Breakers demonstrated their intent, scoring the first nine points of the match. They quickly established a commanding lead, which peaked at 17 points during the closing moments of the first quarter. Despite a spirited effort from the JackJumpers, who managed to narrow the deficit to just two points at one stage, the Breakers maintained a solid 52-41 advantage by halftime.

As the game progressed, both teams faced challenges with foul trouble. Notably, Breakers’ NBA prospect Karim Lopez and Tall Blacks star Sam Mennenga each accumulated three personal fouls before the break, resulting in their early benching at the start of the third quarter. The scoring for the Breakers was led by Americans Rob Baker with 13 points and Izaiah Brockington with 16 points, while the return of Tai Webster as an injury replacement added vital energy to the team’s performance.

The Breakers have had a tendency to relinquish large leads this season, so the 11-point lead entering the fourth quarter was not entirely secure. Lopez made an impact off the bench, scoring a three-pointer on his first touch. Mennenga electrified the crowd with a spectacular dunk, converting a three-point play that underscored the home team’s momentum.

Although the JackJumpers trailed by ten points entering the final quarter, they remained competitive throughout. A pivotal moment occurred when Breakers guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright executed a steal from American Tyger Campbell, followed by an easy lay-up, extending the margin back to 12 points with five minutes left in the game.

As tensions rose among home fans, Tasmania managed to cut the lead to single digits. However, Jackson-Cartwright hit a crucial three-pointer with 1 minute and 40 seconds remaining, providing a much-needed cushion for the Breakers. He later assisted Lopez for another three-pointer, sealing the game for the home side.

Jackson-Cartwright finished with a notable 16 points and 12 assists, while Brockington stood out as the game’s top scorer with 22 points. On the opposing side, American forward Bryce Hamilton led the JackJumpers with 21 points in a valiant effort.
