Jordan Aims to Extend Unbeaten Streak Against Iraq in Quarter-Finals
In a highly anticipated quarter-final match of the FIFA Arab Cup, Jordan is set to face Iraq today at Education City Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Both teams are vying for a spot in the semi-finals, with Jordan aiming to maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament.
Jordan’s Impressive Tournament Performance
The Jordanian team, known as the Nashama, has emerged as one of the standout squads in the tournament. They topped Group C with a flawless run, securing victories against the UAE, Kuwait, and Egypt. This success has instilled confidence and maturity within the squad, according to head coach Jamal Sellami.
Sellami emphasized the significance of the upcoming match, stating, “This is a very important match for us. Now we enter a new knockout competition. We have a great ambition to win, and this requires greater focus and effectiveness.” He noted that Iraq poses a significant challenge, highlighting the need for his players to maintain high performance levels.
Goalkeeper Nour Bani Attiah echoed Sellami’s sentiments, expressing readiness for the challenge. “We played three very important matches. We completed one leg, and now we have a bigger and more important one ahead of us,” he remarked, asserting that Jordan is prepared to deliver a strong performance.
Iraq’s Road to the Knockout Stage
Iraq, finishing as runners-up in Group D behind defending champions Algeria, is also entering this match with high aspirations. They secured wins over Bahrain and Sudan, demonstrating their resilience. Head coach Graham Arnold acknowledged Jordan’s impressive form, stating, “Jordan impressed everyone with three wins, and they are strong contenders for the title.”
Arnold outlined the need for his team to be fully prepared, both physically and mentally, to advance to the semi-finals. He confirmed striker Mohanad Ali may return to the lineup, while goalkeeper Jalal Hassan is ruled out due to injury. Midfielder Hussein Ali is suspended following a red card received against Algeria.
“We will choose the best 11 based on fitness and focus,” Arnold said. Despite the absences, he expressed confidence in his squad, which includes defender Saad Natiq. Natiq stated, “We know the challenge is tough for both sides, but we trust our group. We are ready and determined to advance.”
As the match approaches, both teams understand the stakes of this knockout round. With a strong crowd expected at Education City Stadium, the atmosphere promises to be electric, reflecting the significance of this matchup in the context of regional football.
