A recent nationwide survey reveals that New Zealand children are embracing sushi, spending significant time on TikTok, and using the trending term “sigma” in their daily conversations. The findings come from the CensusAtSchool – TataurangaKiTeKura Aotearoa project, which has already engaged nearly 16,000 students from 310 schools across the country. This initiative, managed by the University of Auckland’s Department of Statistics, receives support from the Ministry of Education and Stats NZ.

The survey, which aims to capture the evolving habits and preferences of young New Zealanders, invites students to share insights into their eating, viewing, and social trends. According to Rachel Cunliffe, co-director of CensusAtSchool, the project provides a unique opportunity for students to see their experiences reflected in the data. “It’s a snapshot of Kiwi life, straight from the source,” Cunliffe stated.

The popularity of sushi is particularly noteworthy, indicating a shift in dietary preferences among the youth. As traditional meals give way to contemporary choices, sushi has emerged as a favorite item for many students. TikTok’s overwhelming dominance in screen time among children has also been confirmed, with many students reporting it as their primary source of entertainment.
