New Plymouth Boys’ High Students Launch 40-Hour Challenge
A group of students from New Plymouth Boys’ High School are gearing up for a significant physical challenge aimed at raising awareness for men’s mental health. The Fortress 40 event is set to commence on March 15, 2024, and will feature seven prefects, including head boy Zavier Brown, who will participate in various activities such as a staff versus students football match, late-night ultimate frisbee, surfing, and a two-hour running event.
The initiative originated from Tauranga Boys’ College and has since expanded to include several boys’ high schools across New Zealand’s North Island. Its primary goal is to highlight the pressures faced by young men and to foster open discussions regarding mental health issues.
Brown emphasized that the students at New Plymouth aim to symbolize resilience and break the stigma surrounding discussions about men’s wellbeing. They also seek to raise funds for the Movember Foundation, an organization dedicated to addressing various aspects of men’s health, including mental health challenges.
“This challenge is about pushing ourselves to demonstrate the strength needed to overcome mental struggles,” Brown stated. He also noted the importance of supporting their community throughout this initiative.
In addition to the main events, there will be further opportunities for students and the wider school community to engage with the cause, including fundraising and support activities. As of Wednesday afternoon, the school had successfully raised over $1,500 through its fundraising page, showcasing strong community support for the initiative.
The Fortress 40 event is not only a test of physical endurance but also a platform for promoting mental health awareness among young men. As these students prepare to take on this ambitious challenge, they hope to inspire their peers and encourage meaningful conversations about mental well-being.
