Qatar Falls 4-1 to Russia in Final Friendly Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

Qatar’s national football team faced a challenging test, suffering a 4-1 defeat against Russia on September 7, 2025, at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha. The match marked their final international friendly before the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 Asian play-offs, scheduled for next month.
The loss raises concerns for head coach Julen Lopetegui, who utilized this game to experiment with various line-ups in the absence of key players such as Almoez Ali, Hassan Al Haydos, and Ismael Mohammed, all sidelined due to injuries. This defeat follows a disappointing 2-2 draw against Bahrain, resulting in a challenging preparation phase for the team.
Concerns Ahead of Critical Matches
Despite the experimental tactics, Lopetegui would have anticipated stronger performances with crucial matches against Oman on October 8 and the UAE on October 14 approaching. Qatar needs to finish atop their group to secure a place in next year’s World Cup.
Defender Tarek Salman acknowledged the need for improvement after the match. “The coach is discovering new players and trying to find the right combination. Of course, there are mistakes,” he said. “We certainly have to learn from our mistakes. The fans might be tired of hearing the same things, but this is the reality. We have to take the positives and learn from what happened.”
Playing in front of a supportive home crowd, with free entry provided by the Qatar Football Association, the Asian champions struggled to match Russia’s intensity and precision. Russia began the match aggressively, forcing Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham into action early on, denying an attempt from Aleksei Miranchuk.
Match Highlights
As the first half progressed, Russia continued to dominate possession. In the 23rd minute, a header from Aleksey Batrakov rattled the crossbar, just grazing Barsham’s fingertips. Qatar’s first opportunity came five minutes later when Akram Afif earned a corner, but the Russian defense thwarted the effort.
Russia struck first in the 33rd minute when Aleksandr Golovin finished off a cross from Batrakov. Just two minutes later, a lofted delivery from Danil Krugovoy found an unmarked Matvey Kislyak, who headed in Russia’s second goal. The first half concluded with Ivan Sergeyev capitalizing on a rebound in the 45th minute, giving Russia a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.
Qatar returned to the field with renewed energy and created chances early in the second half. Afif nearly connected from close range, while a header from Igor Diveev for Russia sailed over the bar. Batrakov also had a goal disallowed for offside.
In the 62nd minute, Afif pulled one back for Qatar, exchanging passes with Mohamed Manai before slotting the ball into the center of the box. However, Russia responded quickly, with Miranchuk scoring the fourth goal in the 69th minute, restoring the three-goal advantage and sealing a comprehensive victory for the visitors.
As the Qatari squad returns to club duties, they will regroup to prepare for the essential World Cup qualifying campaign next month, with hopes of bouncing back from this disappointing performance.
