Qatar Secures Key Victory Over India in U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers

Qatar moved closer to qualifying for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 in Saudi Arabia after a decisive 2-1 victory over India in their Group H match on March 24, 2024. The game took place at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, marking Qatar’s second consecutive win in the qualifying rounds.
The hosts showcased their strength following a resounding 13-0 victory against Brunei earlier in the week. In the match against India, Hashmi Al Hussain opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a powerful header, setting the tone for the encounter. Jassem Al Sharshani later added to the tally with a penalty in the 65th minute, while Muhammad Suhail scored for India shortly after the halftime break.
Match Highlights and Turning Points
India began the match with intensity, applying pressure on the Qatari defense through quick passing. Despite their early momentum, Qatar found the back of the net first, with Al Hussain capitalizing on a defensive lapse to head the ball past Indian goalkeeper Sahil Poonia.
After the halftime break, India responded with determination. In the 52nd minute, Suhail connected with a cross from Mohammed Sanan, directing a header into the goal to level the match at 1-1. However, India’s hopes were short-lived. Just 13 minutes later, Pramveer Singh received a second yellow card for a foul on Noureldin Ibrahim, leaving India with ten men.
Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, Qatar was awarded a penalty following the foul. Al Sharshani stepped up to convert the spot-kick with confidence, restoring Qatar’s lead and marking his second goal in as many matches.
Implications for the Tournament
With this victory, Qatar secured the top position in Group H with a total of six points and an impressive goal difference of +14. India and Bahrain currently sit in second and third place, each with three points. The tournament format allows for the group winners and four best runners-up to qualify for the finals, placing Qatar in a strong position to advance, though official qualification remains unconfirmed.
As they prepare for their final group match against Bahrain, who also had a convincing win against Brunei, Qatar aims to continue their unbeaten record and solidify their place in the upcoming finals. The match is set to take place on March 28, 2024.
