Ryman Healthcare Abandons $240 Million Christchurch Village Project
Ryman Healthcare has decided to abandon its plans for a $240 million retirement village in Christchurch, a significant move given the project’s prominent location. The proposed seven-level facility was to be built on Park Terrace, a prestigious area where Ryman was originally founded. This decision was announced today by agents from CBRE, who are now tasked with selling the land located at 76 and 78 Park Terrace.
According to Cameron Darby, the director of capital markets at CBRE Christchurch, the company has been involved in the sale process following Ryman’s withdrawal from the project. The retirement village was set to be situated directly opposite the scenic Avon River and adjacent to Hagley Park, a prime setting intended to attract retirees seeking a premium lifestyle.
Ryman Healthcare, led by chief executive Naomi James, has faced challenges in advancing its development plans in recent years. While the company had secured resource consent for the Christchurch project, it has since opted to retract its plans. The decision to step back from this high-profile site also coincides with similar halts in development projects elsewhere, including a proposed site on Lake Pupuke in Takapuna.
This strategic pivot reflects broader trends in the retirement sector, where companies are reassessing their investment strategies in light of changing market conditions. By selling the land, Ryman aims to redirect its focus and resources towards more viable opportunities.
As the property market evolves, Ryman’s decision could have ripple effects on future developments in Christchurch and beyond. Investors and stakeholders will be closely monitoring how this shift impacts the company’s portfolio and strategic direction moving forward.
