Columba College in Dunedin has announced that principal Mrs. Nicol, who has been on leave since July, will not be returning to her position. The decision was communicated through an email sent to staff and parents by Graeme Riley, presiding member of the Board of Trustees, and Amy Columb, president of the Board of Governors. Aaron Everett, who has been serving as acting principal, will continue in this role for the foreseeable future.

Leadership Transition at Columba College

Mrs. Nicol became principal of the state-integrated school in Dunedin in 2023, making her the third principal since 2018. In the statement, the board expressed gratitude for her contributions, stating, “We would like to thank Mrs. Nicol for all her work at the college. She has shown passion and drive in leading the school, and we wish her all the very best in her endeavours.”

In light of the leadership change, Aaron Everett addressed students, encouraging them to engage with parents and teachers regarding their concerns. He acknowledged the potential unease surrounding the announcement, saying, “I understand that this news may be unsettling. While this is a change for our school, I want to assure you that all of the end-of-year celebrations and events will happen as usual.”

Community Support and Future Plans

Everett emphasized the importance of community support during this transition, stating, “As a community, we support each other, and I know you will all look after each other.” He also paid tribute to Mrs. Nicol for her dedication and contributions to the school.

The decision not to reinstate Mrs. Nicol marks a significant moment in the school’s ongoing evolution, and the community is expected to rally together as it moves forward. Further details regarding the leadership change and its implications may be available in the upcoming issue of the Otago Daily Times and on ODT Online.
