Dunedin Community Christmas Dinner Offers Free Feast on December 25
The annual Dunedin Community Christmas Dinner will take place on December 25 at the Dunedin Town Hall, welcoming everyone to a complimentary festive gathering. Organized by the Dunedin Christmas Charitable Trust, the event aims to provide more than just a meal; guests can expect an engaging experience featuring elegant decor and exceptional service.
According to Rob Riddell Tigeir, a member of the trust, the dinner will include two hours of entertainment alongside a two-course meal, all at no cost to attendees. “It is table service and it is just great fun,” he stated. Early registrations indicate strong interest, with over 400 people already signed up for the event, which begins at 11:30 AM.
The vision for this year’s dinner includes enhancing the overall experience, as noted by trustee Esther Gilbert. “We are trying to bling it up as much as we can within the means that we have,” she mentioned, emphasizing that the feast will surpass a typical budget buffet.
To ensure a high-quality meal, volunteer leader Kevin Gilbert announced that Michael Tomlinson, former head chef at Forsyth Barr Stadium, will lead a team of volunteers. This year, the menu will be enriched with contributions from various sponsors, including Bidfood, KiwiHarvest, Meadow Fresh, Anchor, Cowell’s Pavlova, and Alsco Uniforms. Public donations, both in food and cash, have also played a vital role in supporting the dinner.
Gilbert noted a significant contribution, stating, “We have even got the hogget, which is all donated from a farmer down just outside of Clinton.” Additionally, Whirika will provide venison, which will be served to volunteers. The kitchen will accommodate all dietary and cultural needs, ensuring inclusivity for all attendees.
Entertainment will be led by local musician Alan “Ned” Gray, who will perform Christmas songs and facilitate singalongs. To add a special touch, the Catalytic Foundation and Te Kāika staff will distribute gifts for children during the event, while Sending Love Otepoti will supply Christmas cards for the tables.
Support from various local organizations, including Dunedin Venues and Compass Group, has proven invaluable, providing access to commercial kitchens and offering free venue hire for the occasion.
This Christmas dinner is open to everyone, with no questions asked, reinforcing the spirit of community and generosity. Interested individuals can book their place online at christmas.org.nz.
